Pastena and Collepardo caves

The caves of Pastena. A visit to the caves will give the tourist both the chance of satisfying a naturalistic curiosity and the possibility of a spiritual experience. It is almost impossiblenot to perceive a recall to the Palaeolithic era, when it was a place of primary shelter against dangerous natural phenomena. The descent to the caves allows visitors to get in touch with a natural environment million of years old, where human intervention was limited to the creation of a safe path in the rock. The characteristics of the huge cave were determined by the erosive action of a stream of water. This amazing wonder of nature is only 10 minutes from Nenà (14 Km): the tour lasts approximately 1 hour.

The caves of Collepardo. Is also called Grotte dei Bambocci (Cave of the Children), because of the characteristic shape of its dripstones. It is well known for a very long time, because of its enormous size. The cave is visited since the 19th century, and the modern speleology of the 20th century was not able to find additional parts. The limestone around Collepardo is heavy karstified. There are numerous sink holes, the ruins of caves with collapsed roof, with high and steep walls and flat bottom. Typical examples are Pozzo Santullo, Fossa della Volpe, and Fossa di Monte Capezzoi. Grotta di Collepardo consits of two enormous chambers, divided by a wall of limestone formations. The cave is entered from the valley through a rather low portal. After a short passage the path lead up into a huge hall with numerous phantastic pilars and stalagmites.
